Our story
Four centuries under the same linden tree Since the days of coaching inns, Auberge du Gros Tilleul has watched over the square in Argoules. Push the door open: here is the story of a place where we have always taken the time to offer a warm welcome.
In the heart of the Authie Valley, on the castle square in Argoules, Auberge du Gros Tilleul occupies the walls of a four-century-old former coaching inn, one of the oldest inns in the region. Chalk walls, exposed beams, half-timbering, and red terracotta floor tiles: everything here tells the story of the stopovers of the past, when travelers paused for the night, a good meal, and a little warmth.
Centuries have passed, but the spirit remains the same. This former coaching inn turned auberge remains a place of charm and tranquility, between the Picardy coast and the Opal coast, at the gateway to the Somme Bay and just a stone’s throw from the Valloires Gardens.
For 35 years, our family has been welcoming you within these centuries-old walls. A family welcome, cozy lounges, two large Picardy fireplaces crackling in winter, and a 100% homemade dining experience: this is what we love to share with you, season after season.

The venerable linden tree, planted in the time of Sully
A four-century-old linden tree watches over the village square. Tradition has it that it was planted during the time of Sully, Henri IV’s great minister, who had the roads of France lined with protective trees. Since then, it has cast its shadow over the square and given its name to the inn: the “Gros Tilleul”.
It is under its gaze that generations of travelers have followed one another, and it is still under its shade that we sit down to eat today, on the terrace, on sunny days. A witness tree, which has become the emblem of the house.
A village, a castle,
an inn
A former coaching inn, a lively auberge
Opposite the inn stands a pretty Renaissance castle, and all around, the calm of the Picardy countryside. The inn lives to the rhythm of the village: here you will come across restaurant regulars, walkers returning from the Valloires Gardens, families coming to enjoy the park and the pool, and kite enthusiasts passing through towards Berck and the bay.
It is this simple and warm atmosphere, this blend of history and the art of living, that makes our guests return — often for a weekend, sometimes for much longer.
